First of all, so much has happened since our last time at the AMC2018 Design Justice track! The Allied Media Conference went through a Year of Chrysalis - a year of break, reflection and listening, and announced it’s new wings have formed in August of 2019! The Design Justice Network, as well, used that Year of Chrysalis, to change, grow, and adapt. We built a new website, launched DJN membership, have held several in-person meetings (and remote meetings), now have 10 local nodes internationally, and released a book on Design Justice, to name a few! Early in 2020, we also welcomed new Steering Committee member Denise Shanté Brown, and have since been building community and shared intentions, explored some the challenges and opportunities of the rapid recent growth of the network (we now have over 800 signatories and over 200 members!), and collaborated with the design community at the @svadsi to support our membership engagement strategy through their Design for Social Innovation Communications Design class. We realized we need a mission and vision, and we are bringing in a facilitator to help us with that process - this process and proposals will be shared back to the network here, at the network gathering, for further DJN engagement. This content forms the foundation of the work and conversations we will embark on together during our virtual gathering on June 23, 2020.
Since the Design Justice Track at the AMC in 2018, the world has also been transformed by the global pandemic and the ongoing uprising for Black liberation. Many of us in the Design Justice Network are organizing, mobilizing, donating, listening, gathering information, and trying to hold space for reflection. We're focused on long term transformation and lifting up movements that can build the worlds we need, worlds without anti-blackness. As a newly-formed network, we are trying to figure out how to move together in order to be able to do this work for the long haul.
Join us for the first ever virtual Design Justice Network Gathering! We will examine the structural integrity of our network as we gather for the first time since launching our formal membership model. We will assess our resilience by reinforcing connections, discussing our roots, identifying pain and pleasure points, sharing each other’s work, and by focusing on building dynamic, adaptable systems. Current individual, node, and working group DJN members are invited to this gathering. Participants will leave with more tools and resources to support nodal sustainability and gain skills to reinforce their own design practices.
Coordinators: Rigoberto Lara Guzmán (they / he), Christina N. Harrington, Ph.D. (she/her), Carlos Garcias (L05) (he/they), and Em Borden
