About this Event
Date: Sunday, September 13th
Time: 1:00 - 3:00pm EST (GMT -4)
As designers and researchers, how can we can build power and accountability in our organizations when “the community” we serve is distant or absent in our day-to-day work?
This workshop is for people familiar with the Design Justice Network and its 10 principles to try and figure this out, together.
What to expect in this workshop:
In this two-hour workshop, we will explore the principles we bring to work by engaging with common situations and shared experiences.
In small groups, we will review scenarios drawn from real-life stories, generate strategies and approaches that live up to our values, and practice organizing around systemic change within organizations and institutions.
Participants will leave having developed strategies and tactics they can use in their workplaces, organizations, and communities – and make stronger connections to a community of practice that can support us going forward.
Why we're hosting this workshop, and what comes next:
This workshop grew out of a long conversation among designers and researchers struggling to bring justice, equity, and power into our work. This workshop is our way of making progress on applying the Design Justice Principles, by engaging with a mix people with different professional experiences and struggles. After this workshop, we will also develop a resource for broader use and participants will be credited if they wish for contributing to make it possible. We will also send an invitation for a future "train the trainers" for you to facilitate a version of this workshop with your community and network.
Accessibility and Privacy:
We will be using Zoom, a video conferencing tool. We follow the Zoom Zoom security guidelines of our friends at Palante Tech Cooperative. For the majority of the workshop you will be in small breakout sessions working with others through discussion and an Etherpad to collaborate in writing. We suggest using a laptop or desktop computer to join the session because of the length and use of Etherpad service for note taking. We will not share your contact details with anyone and we will not use them to contact you directly- all of our communication to you will be done through Eventbrite. Check out Eventbrite's UK & EU data protection notice for more.
