Grief, Money and Power // Two-Part Virtual Series with BIPOC DEATH AND GRIEF TALK
Grief is ever-present in our relationships to money: from the trauma of poverty, to guilt over wanting to have material safety and security, to the constant violence and dehumanization of capitalism, ableism, and white supremacy. These systems of power keep us in shame and isolation, as we police ourselves and each other around money. And yet, it is necessary for us to have transparent, kind, and accountable conversations about finances as we envision new ways of resourcing our design and collective liberation work.
What if we shift the frame to hold space for our collective grief, however it might be showing up—as numbness, exhaustion, hopelessness, rage? What if we were held, validated, and affirmed in our full selves, with all our lived experiences around resources and money? Join our February Care Pod series, where BIPOC Death & Grief Talk (Kayla Carter and Carmen Galvan) will guide us through an exploration of grief, money, and power, in relation to design justice.
We invite you to join both gatherings or one, choosing which focus feels most relevant for you. These experiences are virtual, free, and open to people practicing (or curious about) Design Justice and Design Justice Principles. DJN Membership and previous attendance are not required. Design Justice Principles will be weaved into each gathering and we will invite discussions that connect us back to creative, collaborative ways of working and being.
Our February Care Pod series is open to anyone, but will center the needs and experiences of BIPOC folks.
CARE CIRCLE
February 17, 2024 / 1 - 3:30PM EDT
In this Care Circle, we will gently enter into an exploration of our relationships with money and power; an often complicated space of rupture, repair, and loss. How does capitalist violence shape the way our communities experience money and resources (both inner and outer)? How do we navigate the ways that money impacts personal and collaborative relationships? We will be held through these inquiries with reflective prompts, deep listening, and conversation. We welcome you to show up as your full self, with all your emotions and lived experiences; to have your mic/camera off; and to participate in whatever ways feel comfortable for you.
PRACTICE SPACE
February 27, 2024 / 6 - 8:30PM EDT
What if we embody ways of being in relationship to money that value our inherent worth and dignity? And what if we carry these ways of being into our creative projects and processes? In this Practice Space, we will deepen into an exploration of these questions, bringing them into conversation with our everyday lives and practices. There will be multiple ways to engage, including reflective prompts, deep listening, and dialogue. We welcome you to show up as your full self, with all your emotions and lived experiences; to have your mic/camera off; and to participate in whatever ways feel comfortable for you.
