DJN Toronto Update: OPIRG event (Aug 2019)

Hi, DJN Toronto folks,

This update may be a little late but better late than never, right?

This is an update on the event we partnered with OPIRG for this summer.

DJN Toronto Report-Back of: Stir It Up: OPIRG Toronto's Anti-Gallery of Joyous Rebellion

August 16, 7-10pm

Location: 25 Cecil Street, SteelworkersHall

What was this event?

Alternative Toronto and OPIRG presented an evening of defiant joy in the face of a hostile government and a world that feels like it’s crumbling. We make our own world and we make our own justice.

What happened there?

For this debut public presence of DJN Toronto Node, we had quite a blast introducing the principles and a sampling of a Design Justice perspective at the Stir it Up event.

DJN contributed to the event by facilitating an interactive session where participants analyzed an issue of their choice through a simplified accountability lens. The choice of issues includes deeply affordable housing in affluent neighborhoods, the adoption of self-driving cars, and a bike-centric Toronto. Participants chose a topic and considered who was involved, who as harmed and who benefited. The activity generated discussions around both DJN purpose and trends people cared about.

We also signed up a surprising number of new members and connected with new and old friends.

Who participated from DJN Toronto?

Victoria, Ryan, Manik, Marcia.
