August 2021, Design Justice Newsletter

August 27, 2021 by Victoria Barnett in Newsletter

Dear DJN Members, Signatories, and Friends,

Thank you to the new DJN Communications team, who is working to make these newsletters more concise; The newsletter is fully online below - with some beautiful images and new designs!

This month, we opened up the Network’s visioning process with some initial long-standing DJN members that have participated in organizing, volunteering, and facilitating and we can’t wait to share some of this with the rest of the network in the upcoming months! Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this process. We also welcome the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) node officially to the network (details below), and for those who are Montreal (or surrounding area) based, you’ll see a callout below for a new node coming together there! We are re-highlighting DJN member, Nushin Yazdani, this month, and of course, provide links to various paid and volunteer opportunities (and more), in this newsletter!

Thank you for reading, and if you have any thoughts/feedback or ideas for these newsletters, please do get in touch with us!

- Taylor Simone and Victoria Barnett, DJN International Network Coordinators, and the new DJN Communications team!

What does Design Justice mean to Nushin?

“Design Justice means reflection, listening, care, and collective action. It means the arduous but joyful process of liberation from oppressive and exploitative systems—individually and collectively.”

  • WELCOME to the new node DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) Node: Design Justice DMV brings together equity-based designers across DC, Baltimore, and the surrounding regions who want to share a social space to discuss, learn, and practice design justice principles together. Our node aims to remain non-hierarchical and invites all equity-based designers in the region--regardless of whether they have formal ties to a design education or profession--to participate in shaping and growing the community. We believe that everyone can be an equity-based designer, and we are eager to build a supportive community for equity-based designers from a variety of backgrounds and contexts. Want to get in touch or be involved? Email us at: designjusticedc@gmail.com

  • Montreal Node Seeking Interested folx: A small group of Montreal-based (or nearby!) DJN members are exploring the creation of a new local node! Here are some questions they are thinking about with anyone interested in talking/being involved:

    • What are the local issues and initiatives relevant to Montreal + Design Justice that a local chapter should be talking about?

    • Do you know others (organizations, communities, individuals or initiatives) that we should be reaching out to?

    • Do you want to be involved and how (eg: organizer, speaker, volunteer, participant)? conversations we'd like to It'd be nourishing to hear  if there are

    • If you’re interested in being involved - please reach out to Ariel Harlap on either the DJN Members Slack (@Ariel Harlap) or via email (aharlap@gmail.com) to connect!

All of our current nodes and working groups are listed on our website. If you’re thinking of starting your own, learn more about how to organize a local node and read our local nodes zine that was created to support and give guidance to local nodes. (much of it applies also to Working Groups)

The Design Justice Principles at Work working group can be reached at designjustice.atwork@gmail.com to get involved and learn more.
