March 2022, Design Justice Newsletter
Dear DJN Members, Signatories, and Friends,
We hope this is reaching you well, where ever you are in the world. We are excited to announce that this month both Greek and Hindustani translations of the principles are live on our website. Every time the principles are translated it presents a moment to reflect on how they apply and may even shift depending on local context. This time that reflection is amplified because we have our set of translations (Hindustani) that includes an 11th principle. This decision was made to reflect the context of religion and caste-based oppression. We invite everyone to reflect on a principle or all of the principles using these questions: What nuance do you see in relation to your locality? What challenges do you see? What resilient communities, projects, or organization strategies do you see? Finally, how are you holding or being held by your community?
We thank all of those that volunteered on these translations and those that have volunteered on past translations. You can find the Greek translations here and the Hindustani translations here.
Translation Credits: Greek: Adrian Pappas, Mina Kouvara, Katerina Troullaki, Marilena Diamantopoulo /// Hindustani: Bhawna Parmar, Rubina Singh, Anushka Jajodia, Harshit Yadav, Kamal Jajodia, Madhuri Advani, Manyu Angrish,
We would love to hear everyone's reflections on social media using the hashtag #designjusticespotlight and/or on the member slack channel. Interested in translating the principles? The guidelines are posted here.

“I’ve spent much of my career working at the intersection of mental health and education. I think in terms of the landscape of design, I identify as someone who's designing social systems and really find my role to be one that attempts to transform power through
my design work.” - Rene Benavides
This month we are featuring member Rene Benavides. Rene is the founder of Vision to Action (VTA) Collective, a designer with Design x Emergence (D4E) and an experienced leader, facilitator, and coach. Rene finds joy in coaching others and facilitating spaces where individuals and groups engage in radical forms of love, healing, and transformation. She holds a Masters in Social Work (MSW), a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) and is a former school and systems leader in the non-profit and education sector. Rene is also a Healing Centered Engagement Practitioner, a former National Equity Project Leading for Equity Fellow, a former Stanford d.school School Retool Fellow, and is currently training in somatic methodology towards International Coach Federation (ICF) certification. In addition to being part of the Design Justice Network, Rene is also a member of the Latinx Center for Excellence in Behavioral Health and the Justice Teams (JTN) California Healers Network.

(Call for Entry) The Design Justice Network (DJN) Principles at Work (PAW) Zine subgroup is creating a series of mini-zines around applying the principles in professionalized workplaces. We are looking for visual and written submissions for the second mini-zine in the series, "Design Justice Principles at Work: Neurodiversity".
The topic of Neurodiversity in the workplace is of vital importance to helping Neurodivergent individuals find comfort and function in their daily work life as well as educating Neurotypicals (majority of population without neurodivergent conditions) in how to more effectively communicate and work with NDs. The submission form can be found here.
The Design Justice Principles at Work working group can be reached at designjustice.atwork@gmail.com to get involved and learn more. They host two regular meetings a month, with various sub-groups, so please get in touch if you’re interested.
All of our current nodes and working groups are listed on our website. If you’re thinking of starting your own, learn more about how to organize a local node and read our local nodes zine that was created to support and give guidance to local nodes. (much of it applies also to Working Groups)
Volunteer opportunities
Would you be willing to share your experiences with the Design Justice Network? There are no prerequisites (including a traditional design background), and past stories have featured members working in a variety of fields such as social work, community organizing, and handicrafts. We make the process easy for you (no writing involved!) and will only share what/how you consent for us to. We are particularly interested in hearing from members outside of Europe and the North American East Coast. If you have questions or interests, please contact Lydia at designjusticenetwork@gmail.com.
