November 2022, Design Justice Newsletter
Dear DJN Members, Signatories, and Friends,
We’ve spent this past month nurturing deeper connections between staff and steering committee members as plans for next year take shape. We’ll start the new year with big design justice energy and even bigger announcements – plus a community-wide summit focused on 2023’s Annual Flow. Registration will open in early January.
Are you a new signatory or member of the Design Justice Network? Have you been around a while but want to connect with staff or other members? Our final Welcome to the Network session of 2022 is Tuesday, December 6th* at 8:00-9:00 AM ET (GMT-05). (*email lists the 7th by mistake!)
Welcome Sessions cover the history of DJN and how the Principles were formed by Network members, and highlight Network activity across Nodes, Working Groups and Special Projects. If you’re curious about where to take your design justice practice next, joining a welcome session is a great way to get the latest updates on all the Network opportunities available to you. Check out last month’s recording here!
Today is Giving Tuesday – is Design Justice Network on your gift list this year? You can donate directly or shop our store (Dec 22 last day for shipping before holidays) to support DJN this giving season!
Your Design Justice Network Staff,
Taylor Simone (She/Her), Special Projects Manager

Node & Working Group Updates
All of our current Nodes and Working Groups are listed on our website. If you’re thinking of starting your own, learn more about how to organize a local node and read our local nodes zine that was created to support and give guidance to local nodes. (much of it applies also to Working Groups).
Communications WG is resuming! Rene Joy will reach out to Node and WG organizers in the next few weeks to better understand the collaborative support needed for each time, plus gather end-of-year stories to share with the rest of DJN.
DJN’s Portland Node has a new website and Instagram account (@designjusticepdx) – if your Node or Working Group is on Instagram, make sure you’re mutuals!

Design Justice Network Opportunities
We’re working towards more accessible events, materials and experiences. Guided by the Design Justice Principles, we’re interested in working with accessibility service providers led by and benefiting living experts directly. Do you know any community-based and equitably organized providers that may align with our Network? Send them our way! Submit your entry here or email Taylor: specialprojects@designjustice.org
We’re developing this resource list to share with members and add to our website’s resource page. If you would like to be credited as a contributor to this database, please email (or include) your name, pronouns, and if you are a current member.

Member Stories
Interested in sharing your Design Justice story? Are you inspired by another member’s practice of the Design Justice Principles? Sharing member stories is a powerful part of honoring our community’s history and building a more just and joyous future together.
There are no prerequisites (which means a traditional background in design isn’t necessary!) Past stories have featured members working in a variety of fields such as social work, community organizing, and handicrafts.
We shape the storytelling process around what works best for you and will only share what/how/where you consent for us to share. As our Network grows globally, we’re particularly interested in elevating stories from new and international members!
Please contact designjusticenetwork@gmail.com to share your story or ask questions!
